Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

January 23, 2012 8:30pm

First real storm cycle of the season delivers.  Here are some stats.  Friday night into Saturday Lake Tahoe rose by 4″ (NWS RENO).  The West Shore received ~4″ of rain while Truckee clocked 2″+.

Total snowfall accumulations around Tahoe:

Mt Rose 3.5-4′

Squaw 42-60″

Kirkwood 4′+

Sugar Bowl 3.5-4′

Mammoth 4′+

and who knows how Alpine got so much 43-72″……72″ really?  Common I know it’s been dry but…..how long were the cloud seeders on for?

Whatever, 3-5′ around North Lake Tahoe above 8000′ in 5 days is really good.  And being that the snow was the sticky, it is looking really good out there.  Within days resorts will groom and pack, and skiing will be like spring….because it is going to be 50F in Truckee the next few days.

Forecast- Cold tonight with an E-NE N wind into Tuesday.  Temps will bottom out in the low teens in Truckee with massive freezing fog tonight due to the abundance of moisture, upper teens at 8k.  Tomorrow temps in the low 40s in Truckee with near freezing at 8k.  Cloudy skies tomorrow and the East wind to 50mph.  The wind will draw out the moisture and helping consolidation during the overnight leaving some nice chalky wind buff in places, pow in others for tomorrow’s pleasure.  The wind will cause some wind scouring on more exposed E-NE aspects.  Darn, just where you want to go get some goods.  High pressure to build in (dirty ridge) for the rest of the week with temps near 50F in Truckee, 40s @ 8k.  Storm track is to stay North for at least a week, possibly through the first week of Feb.  Next chance of significant precip looks to be on/after 2/5.  Things can change.  We have snow, go ski/ ride!  It’s fun!
