February 28, 2012 9:27pm

It’s leap year and the forecast couldn’t be better. 3-5ft of new snow along the Tahoe Sierra Crest by late Thursday, 1-3ft at lake level, snow levels at 2000′. Ahhhhh but the wind. Tahoe is about to get its due. We haven’t had a great storm yet this year, but the models and current forecasts are painting quite a nice picture for the next two days of non-stop snow! Snowfall totals will be what we expect from a typical Tahoe mid-winter BIG storm. HPC H2O forecast has doubled and then some as the finer details of this incoming storm system are worked out. Expected water equivalency of precipitation over the next two days is at/above 3″ along the Western slope of the Northern Sierra Nevada. 1.5-2.5″ of H2O is forecast for the Tahoe Basin at 15:1 up to 20:1 snow-to-water ratios. The blower goodness. All systems are go as snow has already started in the Tahoe region tonight and will continue for the greater part of the next 48hrs. Winter Storm Warning has been issued.

Winds will be an issue tomorrow as greater than 100mph SW winds will hammer the ridgelines facilitating the transfer of enormous amounts of snow onto N-NE-E aspects that currently have a solid/icy base with 3-4% snow on top (yesterday’s snow). The avalanche danger rating in Tahoe will be High tomorrow. Play it safe, Thursday and Friday will be good. Give the snow time to adjust, but don’t wait too long because warm temps are on the way for this weekend.

Yep warm temps. Not to fret, more snow is probable next week. Maybe again next weekend. Maybe March will be good for snow enthusiasts. Enjoy the next few days of much needed powder skiing/riding. Play it safe and keep an eye on buried treasure as it is still low tide.

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

February 27, 2012 10:02pm

Today was a delight in Tahoe as unexpected snow dumped over three times the forecast. Snowfall accumulations were 6″ or better at lake level with an easy foot at elevation. Dust on crust! Face shots with a hard, sketchy bottom. Add some bumps and fun is to be had. Head for the low angle pow!

Our future holds a Winter Storm Warning which will bring an additional 1-2′+ above 7k by Thursday morning. We just have to get through Tuesday before the snow comes back Tuesday night. Keep the wind in the back of your mind as you read this forecast in relation to snow safety. Today the Sierra Avalanche Center issued an advisory rated considerable. Expect that to go to high tomorrow.

The forecast for the next four days will be very active. Tuesday will feature a sort of break between systems. Party cloudy skies and temps in the upper 30s at the lake, mid 20s at 8k. Winds will pick up substantially Tuesday gusting to 65mph from the Southwest, increasing to 125mph overnight into Wednesday when ridge wind gusts could hit 140mph. SW winds in Truckee could hit 65mph during Wednesday. After today’s snowfall, there is a lot of snow available for transport. The snow is there, the wind will be here, the slabs will form. Ice, with a topping of duff with slabs forming over top is a recipe for disaster. Be mindful of the ever temping wind loaded spots and slab formation. With more snow in the forecast, lots of cold dry snow and an icy base layer, natural and human trigger avalanches are probable.

Snow will develop Tuesday night and will taper to showers by Thursday. Showers could linger through Thursday along the TSC. HPC H2O forecast popped like the Facebook IPO today going from a quarter inch in the five day to now 2″+. Get ready for a great snowstorm Wednesday.

Temps will stay cold the next three days, with low 30s in Truckee and 20s @8k. Total snowfall accumulations by Thursday night will be 3-4′ above 7000′ in Tahoe with 1-2′ at lake level.

A note of caution, Truckee will most likely see some dense for Tuesday morning.

Currently the weekend looks dry with temps warming into the 40s in Truckee. Looking into early next week, we could see a return of unsettled weather. Say it’s so!

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

February 23, 2012 8:04pm

Once again I get to type “more blow than snow”. I wish it weren’t true, but the jet stream doesn’t like us. The story reads “main energy to stay just North of Tahoe, with a possibility of stronger, wetter storms in week 2″.

Friday will start out with warm temps and high pressure overhead. As the day progresses, winds will pick up as high pressure breaks down in response to energy moving into the PacNW. The main dynamics will stay North as a backdoor cold front swings through Nevada and the Rockies. Tahoe will see a drop in temps (20F from Friday to Sunday), strong winds gusting to 100mph+ along the ridges Friday night into Saturday, light snowfall meaning a dusting at best, and breezy conditions in town. It will feel like winter, minus the snow. I know, this forecast sucks but I can’t blow sunshine where the sun shouldn’t be shining…and where snow should be falling. Anyway, chance of snow showers Saturday morning, and then just breezy and cold. More shortwaves will move into the PacNW and we will get a chance for light snow Monday and again Tuesday. (dusting) Temps in the 50s Friday in Truckee will be only in the 30s Saturday, and 40s @8k will drop into the 20s. Great for groomer carving! Cold temps are in the forecast for the duration.

Looking positive in the long range. Of course, we are looking at a possibility of storms in week 2. Which is week 3 from a week ago when I said late Feb/ early March would be week two. But I digress. The MJO is looking more favorable and has a positive forecasted track, but it is taking its sweet time getting into phase space 3. When this happens the PNA will flip and we should see the storm door open. Wait till ya see it. Over and out.

February 17, 2012 8:04pm

The holiday weekend will kick off with some wind and snow. I put them in descending order because there will be more blow than snow. Clouds are increasing this evening/ overnight with snow showers developing by dawn. Little to no accumulations are expected, meaning 3″ or less across North Lake Tahoe, slightly more in wind loaded spots at upper elevations. In between showers, cloudy skies and SW winds will keep it a bit raw outside. In town a stiff breeze will be present while along the ridges SW winds will gust to 65mph. Expect flat light on the hill tomorrow, so a blue or yellow goggle lens will be the best choice. Don’t have a yellow or blue lens for your goggles? Well swing by your local Porters and pick up a pair. Great piece of gear to have for low light/ flat light days.

Temps on Sat will top out early in the 40s in Truckee, low 30s @ 8k, dropping down to near 10F in Truckee with teens at 8k Saturday night/ Sunday morning. 30s in Truckee/ 20s @ 8k on Sunday under mostly cloudy skies. Even colder Sunday night/ Monday morning as temps will drop into the single digits in Truckee. Monday will be partly cloudy with temps moderating a bit. High pressure builds in Tuesday bringing temps above normal for Wednesday/ Thursday. Still have that storm in the offering for next weekend (10day).

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

February 16, 2012 8:39pm

It’s true! After two storms dropped upwards of 20″ in the hills of North Lake Tahoe and over 2′ in spots South of lake Tahoe, the region is glowing in the best conditions served up so far this winter season. Skiing/ riding has been A+ this week as cold snow has freshened up the surface conditions. Obstacles abound on steeper terrain, but low angle pow is the $h!t right now. The turns made the last few days are what winter is meant to be. Cold, dry snow! That is of course until the East wind (67mph) cranked up yesterday a few hours after the snow stopped. Keep expectations in check when venturing into exposed N-NE aspects which have been wind scoured, as well as S-W facing aspects were deposition has occurred. Sheltered locations will continue to serve up the goods as temperatures will stay cold through next Tuesday, and cloudy skies will be common through the weekend keeping solar radiation in check. People are out and skiing now as winter has finally taken hold. Been a long time coming. Snow quality above 9000′ is fantastic right now.

Friday will be a day of transition as high pressure erodes in response to incoming Pacific energy. Sunny skies will become opaque and then cloudy and the winds will also increase late in the day. The previously forecast storm for Saturday is looking weak now as the main dynamics will stay North of the Tahoe Basin. We will get the wind and cold air, but not much more than a few inches of new snow at the highest elevations is expected. H2O forecast for the period is around .25″, meager at best. There will be snow flakes in the air at times between Saturday and next Tuesday as overall troughiness hangs along the West Coast. Unfortunately for Tahoe there won’t be a good moisture tap.

Temps will be mostly in the 40s in Truckee, 30s on Sunday, warming to near 50F next Wed/Thurs. Winds will pick up late Friday and stay strong through Sunday with ridge gusts to 65mph+ from the W-SW. Expect breezy conditions at lake level and in Truckee. Temps at 8000′ will stay in the 30s, dropping into the 20s for highs on Sunday. Warming trend next week will be first felt at elevation until the inversion breaks in the lower valleys.

High pressure builds back in keeping dry and stable conditions over the region Wednesday and Thursday. There is a possible storm in the offering next weekend, but we have heard that far to many times this winter only to see the sun stay unobscured in sky for weeks on end. Longer range shows a possible pattern shift 2/29, but again, wait till you see it! Let’s go leap year!

Get out and enjoy this holiday weekend. Seeing how this year has gone, get it while you can. The time is now!
